The original 12 Apostles were the pillars of the early Church, traveling across the known world to share the teachings of Jesus. Their journeys were defined by deep faith and, for most, a martyr’s death. The sites where they are believed to be buried aren't just historical landmarks; they are tangible links to the dawn of Christianity.
Exploring these traditional resting places helps us feel a deeper connection to their commitment. Here is where these twelve brave men are said to have been laid to rest:
Simon Peter
The "rock" of the Church is traditionally believed to be buried in Rome, Italy. His tomb sits directly beneath the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, with archaeological evidence pointing to a burial site dating back to the early centuries.
James the Greater
The older brother of John and patron saint of Spain, James was beheaded in Jerusalem. Tradition says his remains were carried to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Since the 9th century, his shrine has been one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in the world.
John the Beloved
The only apostle traditionally believed to have died of old age, John is said to be buried in Ephesus (modern-day Turkey). A large basilica was built over his grave in the 6th century, though his remains are no longer there today.
Andrew
Peter’s brother Andrew spread the Gospel through Greece and beyond. He is traditionally said to have been buried in Patras, Greece, though many of his relics were later moved to Constantinople (Istanbul) in the 4th century.
Philip
Philip met a martyr’s end and is believed to be buried in the Church of the Dodici in Rome, Italy, where he is honored alongside other saints.
Bartholomew (Nathanael)
Historical details for Bartholomew are a bit more mysterious. Tradition is split, suggesting he may have found his final rest in either India or Armenia.
Matthew (Levi)
The former tax collector and Gospel writer is said to rest in Salerno, Italy. His remains are interred in the beautiful Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle.
Thomas (Didymus)
Famous for his initial doubt, Thomas eventually traveled as far as Mylapore, India. He was killed for his faith there, and his remains are traditionally kept at St. Thomas Cathedral.
James the Less
Information on the son of Alphaeus is less certain. While many traditions place his burial in Jerusalem, definitive historical records are hard to find.
Jude (Thaddeus)
St. Jude, the patron of lost causes, is traditionally believed to be buried in Beirut, Lebanon, though documentation for this specific site is not as well-established as others.
Simon the Zealot
The exact location for Simon’s burial remains a topic of debate. Most traditions suggest his final resting place is in Persia (modern-day Iran).
Matthias
Chosen to replace Judas Iscariot, Matthias is traditionally said to have been buried in Jerusalem, though various regions have claimed his relics over the centuries.
A Note on Tradition
It’s helpful to remember that while these locations are deeply respected, historical evidence varies from site to site. Some are backed by archaeology, while others rely on centuries of passed-down stories. Regardless, these sites continue to inspire people worldwide by preserving the legacy of the men who started it all.
