The term "Catholic" doesn't appear explicitly in the Bible. However, the concept of a "universal" Church—which is what Catholic actually means—is found in many different passages. Let’s take a closer look at where the word came from and how the idea is rooted in Scripture.
Where does the word come from?
The word "Catholic" comes from the Greek word katholikos, which simply means "universal" or "according to the whole." Early Christians started using this word in the 2nd century to describe the unified Church and distinguish it from smaller, local groups that were starting to split off.
We can see how early this started by looking at a few historical records:
- St. Ignatius of Antioch (around 110 AD): He was the first person we know of to use the word. He wrote that "wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."
- The Martyrdom of Polycarp (around 156 AD): This account refers to Polycarp as a "bishop of the Catholic Church," showing the term was already common by then.
- The Muratorian Canon (late 2nd century): This ancient list of holy books mentions letters that were recognized specifically within the "Catholic Church."
Catholic ideas in the Bible
Even without the specific label, the core beliefs of the Church are found throughout the New Testament. Here are a few key examples:
- The Body of Christ: St. Paul describes the Church as one body made up of many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). This idea of all believers being connected is exactly what "universal" or "Catholic" means.
- The Authority of Peter: In Matthew 16:18, Jesus tells Peter, "On this rock, I will build my Church." Catholics see this as the moment Jesus established the leadership that would guide the universal Church.
- The Eucharist: In John 6, Jesus talks about being the "Bread of Life." The belief in his Real Presence in the bread and wine is a central part of Catholic faith that comes straight from these verses.
- The Sacraments: From Baptism (Matthew 28:19) to the other holy rituals, the Bible provides the foundation for the seven sacraments the Church still practices today.
The Catholic Bible
It’s also worth noting that the Catholic Bible includes a few more books than Protestant versions. These are called the Deuterocanonical books (like Tobit, Judith, and Maccabees). These books have been part of the Catholic tradition since the beginning and help shape its unique theology.

To put it simply: the Bible might not use the word "Catholic," but it is full of the teachings and principles that the Church is built on. The name was just a way for the early followers of Jesus to describe their community as one big, unified family of faith that stretched across the whole world.
