Nestled in the southern gateway of Nueva Vizcaya, the town of Santa Fe traces its roots to an old Igorot settlement, originally inhabited by the Kalanguya people. Back in Spanish times, it was part of the missionary district of Ituy and later came under the jurisdiction of the Commandancia of Kayapa.

Eventually, it became part of Aritao before taking on a new identity of its own. On its way to becoming a municipality, it was first known as the Municipal District of Imugan, established through Executive Order No. 39 by then Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison. Later, on July 1, 1964, President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Executive Order No. 77, officially making Santa Fe a regular municipality. The town was named in honor of its patron saint, San Jose–Santa Fe.

Today, Santa Fe is composed of 16 barangays—each carrying a piece of its rich indigenous heritage.
